Hillsborough Public High School Students
Rack Up Service Hours

Tampa, Fla. – (June 15, 2007) – Hillsborough County Public high school students recorded 606,227 community service hours during the 2006-07 school year.

Plant High School reported the highest number of volunteer hours with 59,014 hours.  Riverview High School ranked second with 45,617 hours, and Sickles High School came in third with 40,621 hours.

“I’m proud, but not surprised, that our students gave that many hours of their time to help others,” said Superintendent MaryEllen Elia.  “Teenagers these days get a bad rap, but they are very community oriented, and they don’t think twice about spending time volunteering for good causes.”

President Bush recognized East Bay High School student Daniel Middaugh’s community service efforts when he presented him with the President’s Volunteer Service award in May.  Daniel was selected to receive the award based on his more than 600 hours of community service work in two years of high school.

Community service hours are a requirement for many college scholarships, like those awarded by Coca-Cola, Brighthouse, Discover Card Tribune Award, and the St. Pete Times Barnes scholarships.  Students are also required to demonstrate they have performed a specified amount of community service work in order to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars award.
